ANZAC Day 2020

ANZAC Day 2020 will be like no other in history and keeping the ANZAC Spirit alive is particularly important in these times.

This ANZAC Day is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made for us and how fortunate we are to live in a country like ours. Although we may not be attending marches and sharing stories at our local RSL Club, this year presents a quiet time to reflect on the importance of peace and also what it means to be Australian.

We remember that mateship formed the foundation of the ANZAC Spirit and helped many Diggers get through the horrors of the trenches. Once again, mateship will get us all through the tough times we are living in currently.

ANZAC Day, regardless of where we are, allows us to reflect on the sacrifices, courage of people and the value of friendship as well as honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for us. Let us remember those who still suffer the effects of war and celebrate the human spirit – the ANZAC Spirit.

Here are 6 ways to commemorate ANZAC Day 2020:

  1. Watch or Stream an ANZAC Day Service

ABC network will be televising a national dawn service live from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra from 5.30am. A pre service program will be shown from 5am for those wishing to tune in. The Governor General and Prime Minister will lead this service.

From 10am RSL NSW are facilitating a televised service from the Hyde Park Memorial and the viewing details for this can be found by checking your local TV guides.

  1. Light up the Dawn – Thanks to RSL NSW

At 6am on ANZAC Day, go to the end of your driveway or stand on your balcony holding a candle or light and listen to a brief commemorative service. Together – even while apart – we’ll remember those who served and sacrificed. You can sign the pledge to light up the dawn at: rslanzacspirit.com.au

  1. Recite the Ode

Take the time to recite the Ode at 6am and reflect on the sacrifices our Diggers made when the first Australian troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915. Share a minute silence with your family.

  1. Share a message of Support – Thanks to RSL NSW

You may wish to share how you’ll be commemorating ANZAC Day by recording a video message or your recitation of the Ode.  You can share this to social media by responding  “Going” to the ANZAC Day 2020 Facebook event. Then use the hashtag #ANZACSpirit.

You may also wish to thank a Veteran who you know personally. Call them and thank them for their service or post to their Facebook page to show them your support.

  1. Reflect on Mateship

Mateship formed the foundation of the ANZAC Spirit which now more than ever is vital to get us through the challenges we are facing. Use ANZAC Day as a reminder to check on those who may be alone or struggling. Call or text a mate and see how they are going and make plans to catch up at Ingleburn RSL when we re-open.

  1. Bake ANZAC Biscuits

During World War One, the friends and families of soldiers and community groups sent food to the fighting men – this was the birth of the ANZAC Biscuit.
Bake some of these biscuits on ANZAC day and teach your family about their origin – they are simple to make so it’s a great opportunity to get the kids involved and learning about ANZAC Day. Click here for a recipe.

On behalf of Ingleburn RSL Club President, the Board of Directors, CEO and the staff at Ingleburn RSL, we are saddened that we will not be sharing ANZAC Day with you this year. We encourage you all to Respect the Day from your homes and remember those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us during past moments of conflict and crisis.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget

Sincerely,

Glenn Cushion
