From the time she was a teenager, Sharon Robertson knew there had to be a better solution for homeless people to keep their limited belongings safe while sleeping rough. Fast forward many years and she created the solution through No Home My Home, a lockable bag with a tent. A recent ClubGRANT of $5,000 from Ingleburn RSL Club will accelerate the distribution of the No Home My Home kits to the people who need them most.
A practical solution to a real problem
It wasn’t an easy process for Sharon to find the perfect bag. Then there was the design of the tent. And the other items that are included in the bag. She eventually found a manufacturer and No Home My Home became a reality.
“A lot of people shy away from talking about homelessness,” says Sharon. “But what we’re trying to do is give these people back some dignity knowing that they can fall asleep at night not worrying that their stuff is going to be stolen.”
No Home My Home also includes a thermal mat for warmth and other essential items, such as a torch and batteries. This is more than a tent and not just a bag. It’s a home.
“The response has been amazing,” adds Sharon. “As word is spreading, we’ve had homeless people messaging us and asking to join the waitlist for the kits.”
Grassroots action
As a new charity, Sharon admits that funding is always a challenge. But she’s incredibly grateful to Ingleburn RSL Club for awarding a ClubGRANT to No Home My Home.
“Without this ClubGRANT, we wouldn’t have been able to distribute the bags when they arrive in January,” she explains. “We didn’t have the funds to cover the insurance we needed. But thanks to Ingleburn RSL Club we can now pay for that insurance and also buy some extra items for the bags. We’re able to give more back to the community.”
We’re inspired by grassroots action and proud to support Sharon and No Home My Home.
“Our purpose is to connect with and support our community, and ClubGRANTS is a big part of how we do that,” says Terry Goldsworthy, President of Ingleburn RSL Club. “Knowing that our contribution is going to have such an immediate impact on the community is very satisfying. We look forward to seeing the future of No Home My Home.”
